Or, "the Great Goblin Massacre"

Ring of Iron, Ring of Smoke is a plot for the Red Arrows, a kinship on the Landroval server of Turbine's Lord of the Rings Online MMO. The story describes the effort by the Arrows to relocate a lesser ring of power crafted as a weapon against the Arrows' greatest ally. If the ring cannot be recovered, Fionwe the wind-lord will be made a slave to the Witch-king.

Status

This plot has concluded. The wiki is as complete a storehouse of data as I can make it, and it acted as a central hub for players involved in the story as well as some observers. Corrections and additions will be made to this wiki when they surface.

The tale ended when the Red Arrows recieved word -- through their friends in the Mathom Society, the Bounders, and the Shirrifs -- that Lubach was in hiding in a network of tunnels beneath the Greenfields. They divided into two groups. One half the company rode hard for the Shire, while the rest rode to Amon Sul where they repelled a last-minute attack by Orcs attempting to secure the hill.

Beneath the Greenfields, the Arrows came into conflict with Lubach's goblins, Najor the Iron-handed and his guard of Angmarim, and Grannis. Grannis was slain in a tense fight with Baelan Norfalcon. Najor was forced to withdraw after a skirmish with Landuin. Lubach was slain by Synnova, who reclaimed Anghithya from his corpse. Wounded but victorious, the Company withdrew and regrouped at Bree.

What Has Gone Before

Plot Points and the Menu

While some of the story was determined ahead of time, certain other elements were only decided when particular events occured in the game. The heroes would discover which tribe of Goblins had the ring, but which one? That was determined through the use of plot points.

"Plot Points" are an abstract OOC system designed to measure player involvement in the plot. Player characters earn plot points by doing things in game. Almost any type of activity can potentially earn plot points, including Crafting, Questing, Grinding, Social RP, and Recruiting. Of course, the particulars of any story will narrow the list of potential plot points to a specific theme, but ideally all types of play should be encouraged. However, it is recognized that not all player characters will have an equal opportunity to gain points in every plot.

Plot points accumulate and allow players to attain certain goals in the story. For example, a character who slaughters a large number of Goblins in the Ered Luin may overhear a clue that helps narrow the potential leads on refinding the Ring of Iron Mist. A character who crafts many scrolls of jeweler lore may learn how the ring was forged, and perhaps a way to unmake or thwart it. A player who earns Enmity of the Goblins III may so anger the goblins that their leader tries to use the ring against that player character. A character who earns Reputation status with the Elves of Rivendell may gain access to Elrond's personal store of ring-lore. And so on.

The Plot Point Menu will show you all the activities which earned plot points for Ring of Iron, Ring of Smoke.

This page is a collection of useful goblin-related facts from the game world. It includes lists of Goblin-tribes, named Goblin characters, Goblin-related deeds, and reputation groups. Some of these lists are incomplete; any contributions to these lists are much appreciated.
